Chelsea press conference live: Frank Lampard on Liverpool defeat, Christian Pulisic, Kepa

A 12th defeat of the campaign, in an eight-goal thriller, means Chelsea must get a result against Wolves on the final day to secure Champions League qualification.

From a defensive point of view, this was a tough watch for Frank Lampard as his team conceded five to the champions and their familiar weaknesses were ruthlessly exploited.

Yet thanks to the impact of the head coach’s substitutes they still looked well in contention for the point that would secure a top-four finish until Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain scored Liverpool’s fifth six minutes from the end.

Despite a good start from the visitors Naby Keita and Trent Alexander-Arnold scored from long range, while Chelsea conceded a 10th goal from a corner when Georgino Wijnaldum made it 3-0 late in the first half.

Although Olivier Giroud found the net once more in stoppage time to make it 3-1 at the interval, Roberto Firmino headed an Alexander-Arnold cross home early in the second period to extend the advantage to three once more.

Tammy Abraham pulled a goal back after fellow substitute Christian Pulisic went on a remarkable dribble past four players.

The American then scored from a Callum Hudson-Odoi assist but the Blues were undone for a fifth and final time on the counterattack as Oxlade-Chamberlain finished Andy Robertson’s cross from the left.

While Pulisic was the biggest positive, there further doubts over Kepa for a couple of Liverpool’s goals.

Stay tuned for everything the Chelsea head coach has to say on the game and what it means for the final game right here.
